CELBAN (Canadian English Language Benchmark Assessment for Nurses)

What is CELBAN?
CELBAN is specifically designed to assess the English language proficiency of internationally educated nurses whose first language is not English. CELBAN has been developed with the support of 50 nursing profession stakeholders, and is based on an analysis of the language demands of the nursing profession across Canada.
How can I register for CELBAN?
You can register for CELBAN by downloading an application form online at the CELBAN website: www.celban.org Test dates are posted on this website. Please do not call the Kwantlen Testing Department--ALL registration is done through CELBAN.
What language skills does CELBAN test?
CELBAN assesses language proficiency in the four skills of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. Scores are reported as Canadian Language Benchmark Levels.
Are the results of CELBAN official?
The CELBAN is now recognized by the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia and the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of British Columbia.

Who can take the CELBAN?
The CELBAN is designed for candidates who are internationally educated nurses who need to meet the English language requirements of the nursing regulatory bodies in Canada.
There are no formal language eligibility requirements. However, it is strongly recommended that a candidate have a minimum of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) Level 6 language proficiency skills before attempting the CELBAN. The scores required are: Speaking: CLB 8; Listening: CLB 9; Reading: CLB 8; Writing: CLB 7.
