English Language Studies Tests (ELST)

The English Language Studies (ELST) Department at Kwantlen Polytechnic University has different tests to assess the English proficiency of students entering the ELST Diploma Program.  These tests are used to place students in the courses which will help them develop their English skills for college and university preparatory level courses.  The complete ELST assessment requires two separate testing days.  You should register for both assessments.  The first assessment consists of the Accuplacer test and the ELST Writing Assessment.  The second assessment is the Kwantlen In-house Speaking and Listening Test (KIST). 

Accuplacer and ELST Writing Assessment:
The Accuplacer Level of English Proficiency (LOEP) test consists of three sub-tests:  Sentence Meaning, Language Use, and Reading Skills.  The tests are taken on a computer in the Language Lab.  Students have a maximum time of 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete the test.  When students have finished the Accuplacer test, they will begin ELST Writing Assessment.  Students are given 40 minutes to complete the writing assessment.  The writing assessment evaluates your reading and writing skills. 

Kwantlen In-house Speaking and Listening Test (KIST):
The KIST is an oral interview test. It consists of a number of speaking and listening tasks.  The test takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.  This assessment evaluates your listening and speaking skills. 

Other Information:

• All ELST assessments must be booked in-person through the Student Enrolment Services office at any campus.  A seventy dollar ($70.00) fee is payable at the Cashier.  If you need only the Accuplacer and ELST Writing Assessment, the cost is $35.00.  If you need only the KIST, the cost is $35.00.
• ELST assessments can be taken a maximum for three times.  If you take the Accuplacer or KIST, you must wait four months before taking either test again.  Once you have enrolled in the English Language Studies Department you cannot take the tests again.
• The test fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.
