English Placement Test
The English Placement Assessment Test (EPT) at Kwantlen Polytechnic University is a tool to assist in placing students in appropriate English courses. The test is used only for diagnostic purposes and is not graded on a pass/fail basis. Students who write the test will receive a copy of the detailed comment sheet filled out by a member of the English faculty who is currently reviewing the tests. This comment sheet indicates the recommended course placement for students. Course placement recommendations are intended to help students succeed by ensuring that they are taking courses commensurate with their current abilities.
Although any student may write the EPT Assessment, students who have already met prerequisites for English courses through other means (see a Kwantlen Calendar, or talk with a Kwantlen Educational Advisor) are not required to write the test.
Test Format:
- Part I: Prose Passage Summary
Students are asked to read a short prose passage and to summarize its main points in a paragraph of one hundred (100) words. - Part II: Essay Response
Students are asked to write a well-developed essay of approximately three hundred (300) words on one of two (2) possible topics. These topics are related to the subject of the prose passage.
Additional Information: _______________________________________________________________________
Students may write the EPT once each academic semester.
