Adaptive Technology and Equipment

Adaptive Technology

A Disability Advisor will advise students on adaptive technology and procedures to obtain it. Most adaptive technology software/hardware is obtained through Assistive Technology-BC or a Canada Student Grant

Students who require adaptive technology are encouraged to contact Services for Students with Disabilities office at least four months before classes begin.

Adaptive Technology Locations on Campus

The adaptive technology locations provide students with disabilities with access required at Kwantlen. Kwantlen will continue to purchase current software and hardware to assist students with disabilities. Please contact a Disability Advisor for current locations.

The hardware and software available throughout campus are:

Voice Input

Dragon Naturally speaking, this allows input of text to limited applications using a continuous dictation (types as you speak) model. This solution uses a headset microphone and learns the user's voice profile.

Comfort Aid

Adjustable tables allow access to equipment for students who use wheelchairs or mobility aids.

Screen Enlargement

ZoomText display enlarges screen output on a PC. ZoomText can be installed on any campus at the student’s request. Larger monitors installed on the desktop computers in Services for Students with Disabilities exam rooms assist people with visual impairments in using screen enlargement programs.

Screen Readers

JAWS for Windows allows a visually impaired user to navigate a graphical interface using voice output and sound cues. JAWS for Windows are installed on PC’s on selected campuses.

Optical Character Recognition Scanning

Document Scanning is done through the use of a Kurzweil scanner. Scanned documents to text may need to be saved in a variety of formats or be read on the screen using speech capabilities. Converted text may be brailled. Check with a Disability Advisor to see where the Scanners are located.

Victor Players

Victor players are available through the Audio Visual area in the library and are used by students who require digital books for reading course materials or texts.

Adaptive Equipment

The following list of adaptive equipment is available for use by students with disabilities. Students who require use of equipment are requested to contact a Disability Advisor on any campus. As Kwantlen equipment is limited, students are encouraged to make arrangements at least one month before the beginning of classes.
