Tom Thorner

TomB.A. University of British Columbia, M.A. University of Calgary

Too small and too slow, but certainly aggressive enough, Tom Thorner failed in his foremost ambition to play middle linebacker for the Chicago Bears. Instead he ended up teaching history in various colleges and universities in Alberta and British Columbia- including several semesters “doing time” at Drumheller Penitentiary which coincided with his interest in the history of crime in Canada.

His publications include three edited volumes as well as articles in journals such as Alberta Law Review, Urban History Review, and Prairie Forum. He also worked as a historical consultant for the Department of Justice, Alberta Attorney General's Department and the Department of Indian Affairs. A workaholic, you will find him in his office six days a week, seven if they ever open the college on Sundays. Tom teaches primarily Canadian history and plans to release a new textbook on the history of British Columbia in the near future.

Recently, Tom began a new chapter in his career at Kwantlen when he took over as Chair of the Department of History. His new slogan is “herding cats”.
