Program Revisions to the AA in Criminology Effective Fall 2011

The Criminology Department recently revised the Associate of Arts Degree in Criminology (AA CRIM) program curriculum. The new program requirements, which were approved by the institution, will be implemented beginning fall 2011.

The revisions to the AA CRIM, which will become effective as of September 1, 2011, include the following changes:

  1. CRIM 1215 will be a required course.

CRIM 1215 Interpersonal and Professional Development (3 credits) is new and is described as follows in the calendar: Students will be introduced to the values and skills essential to working competently and ethically in justice and human service systems. They will learn and practice various aspects of interpersonal communication, including effective listening, empathic engagement, appropriate self-disclosure, ethical decision making, teambuilding, advocacy skills, and interviewing techniques. Students will focus on self-awareness, critical thinking, and reflection, while embracing the values of diversity and humility. They will be active participants, engaging in experiential exercises and various practice sessions throughout the course.

  2. CRIM 1207 is no longer a required course. Instead, you now have the option to choose one of the following three courses:
    • CRIM 1207 Introduction to Criminal Law,
    • CRIM 2211 Introduction to Policing, or
    • CRIM 2214 Corrections: Theory & Practice

NOTE: Students planning to complete the Bachelor of Arts, Major in Criminology (BA CRIM) should complete CRIM 1207 because it is the prerequisite for CRIM 3302 Procedure and Evidence (a required course for the BA CRIM).

  1. Both PSYC 1100 and PSYC 1200 are no longer required courses. Instead, you can choose one of either:
    • PSYC 1100 Introduction to Psychology: Basic Processes or
    • PSYC 1200 Introduction to Psychology: Areas and Applications

NOTE: Please note that PSYC 1100 is currently the prerequisite for CRIM 2330 Psychological Explanations of Criminal Behaviour (a required course for the AA CRIM). Students planning to complete the Bachelor of Arts, Major in Criminology (BA CRIM) should also complete PSYC 1100 because it is currently required for the degree program.

If you have officially declared your program as Associate of Arts in Criminology, you have two choices. You may:

  1. continue to follow your current program, OR
  2. select the new program and follow the new requirements.

While the new requirements offer some flexibility, continuing students who are close to meeting all of the existing AA CRIM requirements may want to complete their degree under the original curriculum requirements.

The best way to gain a full understanding of the new requirements and how they affect your progress to graduation is to meet with an Advisor. Together you and the Advisor can determine which program requirements best meet your individual academic plan and educational goals.

To arrange a one-on-one advising appointment to review the Associate of Arts degree requirements, please book an appointment with an Educational Advisor by calling 604-599-2000 or in person at a Student Enrolment Services counter on any campus.

If you plan to pursue the Bachelor of Arts, Major in Criminology degree program, and have completed 45 credits, please contact the BA Advising Centre at 604-599-3068 or visit the Faculty of Social Sciences offices, Arbutus Building, A2110 (second floor of the Surrey library).
