Highlighted Changes to MLA and APA Styles
The Modern Language Association has recently published a new (7th) edition of its MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers . Copies are available at each campus library, call number: LB 2369 M57 2009.
Likewise, the American Psychological Association has very recently published a new (6th) edition of its Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association . Copies are on order and will soon be available at each campus library.
There have been some significant changes to citations in MLA format. They include:
- titles/subtitles of books, periodicals, films, etc. are NOT underlined anymore; instead they are now italicized
- the "medium" is now included; for example, printed information now has "Print" at the end of a citation; other mediums include: Film, DVD, Television, CD, LP, Performance, TS (for typescript), Web, etc.
- the place for the title of a book in a Series has changed. Series title not in italics.
- electronic references generally do not include a URL (unless required by the instructor, or if the info would be hard to find). The indicator that an item is in electronic form is that the medium (Web) is included in the citation. Untitled online work may be identified by a genre label, such as Home page, Introduction, etc.
Changes to citations in APA format include:
- if there are eight authors or more, the reference list entry now is structured as follows: names of first six authors, three ellipses, last author's name, e.g.: Gilbert, D. G., McClernon, J. F., Rabinovich, N. E., Sugai, C., Plath, L. C., Asgaard, G., ... Botros, N. (2004).
- publishing location now always consists of city and state abbreviation for locations in the United States (e.g.: New York, NY). Outside of the US, it now always consists of the city and country (e.g.: Vancouver, Canada)
- it is now recommended that the DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is also included in citations for print items and for non-periodical items if available
The Library has updated its handouts for students to reflect these changes. They are now available through the Library's Citation Styles page and in print at the Library.
If you have any questions or feedback, please do not hesitate to contact mailto:ulrike.kestler@kwantlen.ca

COPPUL cards are now available at your campus Library
What is a COPPUL card and why would I want one?On April 1, 2009 the Library became a member of COPPUL (Council of Prairie and Pacific University Libraries). As a COPPUL member, Kwantlen is part of the Canadian University Reciprocal Borrowing Agreement which means students, faculty and staff are eligible for in-person borrowing privileges from participating institutions across Canada. See the website below for a list of participating institutions and more detailed information. http://www.coppul.ca/rb/rbindex.html
As well as allowing you access to institutions across the country, having a COPPUL card will streamline the process for obtaining a free card at BC universities like UBC and SFU.How does it work and how do I get a card?
Employees and currently registered students can come to any campus library with their Kwantlen Smartcard (student/employee ID card) and request a COPPUL card at the Checkout desk. The card you receive can then be presented at any COPPUL institution across the country which will in turn issue a free community borrower/extramural card to you. The COPPUL card should be sufficient, but you may want to have your Kwantlen Smartcard and other photo ID on hand, in case you are asked.
It is important to keep in mind that borrowing privileges are determined by each lending library. Other institutions may offer shorter loan periods and some materials such as periodicals, videos or course reserves may not be available to borrow.
Expand and streamline your access to other academic libraries and get your COPPUL card today!

Library & Web Research Sessions
Ensure your students produce well researched assignments - book a Library & Web Research Session today !
"A majority of students in this study leveraged both human and computer-mediated resources to compensate for their lack of information literacy. In particular, students faced problems with determining information needs for assignments, selecting and critically evaluating resources, and gauging professors' expectations for quality research." 1
Make sure your students have the basic information literacy skills needed to produce quality work in your class. Set up a research session in the Library and we can tailor the class to your needs: preparing them for a particular assignment, teaching them how to evaluate information sources, or simply providing an overview of scholarly resources in your subject area.
1 The above quote is from the abstract for: "Information Literacy from the Trenches: How do Humanities and Social Science Majors Conduct Academic Research?" by A.J. Head. To be published in the September 2008 issue of College and Research Libraries. An advanced final draft of the article can be found here: http://www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlpubs/crljournal/preprints/Head.pdf
