Data Services
Kwantlen Library provides access to a wide range of data from Statistics Canada. Some data is 'self-serve': directly available to users through sources such as E-STAT and Canadian Census Analyser. Other data may only be available through more restricted sources such as the Data Liberation Initiative (DLI).
The numeric or geographic files from the DLI are usually 'raw' datasets which must be downloaded into special software like SPSS or ArcView for statistical analysis. For sources of statistics -- which are data that have already been processed or analyzed into tables, etc. -- please see our subject guide for Statistics instead.
E-STAT
E-STAT is a package of data and statistics from Statistics Canada, compiled specifically for educational institutions. It includes data and statistics from both the Census and CANSIM. Users can cross-tabulate selected data variables and generate charts, tables and maps, and also download the information into a variety of programs for further analysis.
Canadian Census Analyser
The Canadian Census Analyser provides access to Census Public Use Microdata Files (PUMF's) from 1971 - 2001. The data is made available by the University of Toronto's CHASS data service. These files enable users to customize their analyses of Census data.
Users can perform basic analyses themselves using the SDA interface (Survey Documentation & Analysis). All of the Census files are available: (1) Individuals, (2) Families, and (3) Households & Dwellings.
For more complex analyses of the variables for Individuals (not for Families, or Households & Dwellings), users can download the files
into SPSS, SAS or other formats.
Data Liberation Initiative (DLI)
What is it?
Statistics Canada's Data Liberation Initiative (DLI) is a community of over seventy Canadian post-secondary institutions. Each institution pays an annual subscription fee that allows their faculty, staff and students access to numerous Statistics Canada public-use microdata files (PUMFs), databases and geographic files, covering many areas: business, education, the social sciences, and more.
Who can use it?
All Kwantlen faculty, employees and students can use the DLI data, as long as they adhere to the DLI license agreement.
How can I get it?
At the moment, all requests for DLI data must be sent to Kwantlen's DLI contact person, Chris Burns
(604-599-3198) in the Library.
How can I use it?
Authorized Kwantlen users can use DLI data for:
- Teaching
- Academic research
- Publishing articles and reports
- Planning of educational services
DLI data may not be used for:
- Contractual, or income-generating activity
- Identification or disclosing information about any person, business or organization
- Redistribution outside the DLI
If you're not sure, please see the DLI license agreement or contact Chris Burns
(604-599-3198) in the Library.
What if the DLI collection doesn't have what I need?
The DLI does not provide access to all of the data that Statistics Canada collects. Some data are only available by purchasing a custom order from Statistics Canada. Some researchers may qualify for access to the Statistics Canada Research Data Centre. Please contact Chris Burns (604-599-3198) in the Library to discuss your options.
