Surrey Peer Coaching Sessions

This is a 10-week program starting the second week of each semester at the Surrey Learning Centre. Coaching sessions are offered every day, three times a day, at 11:00am, 1:00pm and 5:00pm so you have choice of times and can work with a variety of other students in a small group of four or five. Weekly Topics
include:
  • Time management and personal organization (Setting up the semester schedule and setting goals/expectations, balancing practices, games, work, school, family, life, friends)
  • Homework strategies - Specific to courses
  • Using your notes and preparing for tests
  • Making reading work for you
  • Mid term reviews - What is working? What is not?
  • Communication and problem solving - How to talk with your professor, coach, team mates, friends, family
  • Memory and tests
  • Check-in time (Group determines topic)
  • Reviewing assignments, tests and progress - What do I have to do for the rest of my courses in order to do well?
  • Planning for finals

ESL Workshops

The Richmond Campus Learning Centre is pleased to offer ESL Workshops on every second Tuesday at 11am with a repeat session on Thursdays at 2pm, beginning September 21st. The workshops are for ELST and other ESL background students.

Topics include:

  • Dictionaries: more than words (How to use a dictionary effectively)
  • Learning from the WWW
  • Collocations: the secret tool for success
  • Speed Reading: faster and faster
  • Vocabulary Development: tips and tricks
  • Make yourself Understood: speaking clearly
  • Podcasts: using your MP3 Player as a language lab
  • How to Read a Newspaper Effectively and Efficiently.
  • Humour in Canada: what is funny and what isn't funny.
