eClassrooms

Kwantlen Polytechnic University has 100 electronic classrooms at the Richmond, Surrey, Cloverdale and Langley campuses. eClassrooms allow faculty to use technology to assist in the delivery of course material.

Desk Equipment

Each room has an instructor's desk which includes:

Standard Classroom Equipment

Standard classrooms and eClassrooms include:

Desk Designs

As eClassroom instructor stations were introduced into Kwantlen classrooms, various designs were used based on equipment availability and teaching styles at the time.

Original Pedistal Design

A desktop style computer and all the equipment is housed in the pedistal. An audio mixer handles the audio in this setup, and the projector control panel has a PC/LT selection for auto-switching between the instructor computer and a laptop, plus a DVD/VCR selection.

Low Profile Desk

Instructors expressed a preference for a lower desk style similar to student tables, and tower style computers became an industry standard.

New AV control equipment became available which allowed better routing of display signals and sound. An all-in-one projector control panel was placed in a more convenient location on top of the desk. These controllers have separate selections for PC, Laptop and DVD/VCR. Some projectors allow auto-image commands to re-sync a computer image on the projection screen.

Accessible Control Layout

Compact Desk Design

The low-profile desk equipment setup proved successful, however, instructors requested more flexibility in classroom furniture setup, including the ability to move the instructor's station for various class settings. A roll-around cabinet on wheels was designed to accomodate this, but still incorporating the same equipment and full functionality of all other eClassroom stations at Kwantlen.

Using the Computer:

  1. Turn the Computer On. Do not login as soon as the login screen appears. Wait about 30 seconds so that all start-up processes can be completed
  2. Wait until the "Novell Login" window appears.
  3. Faculty: enter your 9-digit employee number & password.
  4. Staff / Guests: Contact the IET ServiceDesk for login information.
  5. After login, let the computer continue loading resources for about a minute before opening a file or plugging in a USB drive.

Note: While the computer is booting, you will see various text being displayed. It is not necessary to press any keys until the "Novell Login" window appears.

USB Drive Connection

The top of each desk has a USB extension cable for memory sticks and jump drives. Simply plug your USB drive into the cable on top of the desk and wait about a minute for the computer to recognize and configure the drive. Windows will likely show a pop-up dialog box from which to open your files. If the dialog box does not appear, open Windows Explorer and click on the drive listed as "Removable Drive" to access your files.

USB Device Removal:

Normally there is an icon in the system tray beside the clock to stop the drive before disconnecting it from the system.

If the icon is missing, click Start / Settings / Control Panel and click "Add/Remove Programs" (You will get an error message, just click "OK" to bypass it).

  1. A dialog window will appear with "USB Mass Storage Device" already highlighted.
  2. Click "Stop" to stop the device,
  3. Click "OK" to confirm the selection and
  4. Click "OK" again to acknowledge the message.
  5. Close the Add/Remove Hardware window.

Projector Control Panel

All eClassrooms have a Projector Control Panel mounted either in the front or on top of the desk. Use this controller to turn the data projector On/Off and switch between PC (with Laptop auto-switching) and DVD/VVR. Press the "On" button, the button will flash with projector activity until the warm-up cycle has completed. The light will then remain steady. If you don’t see a picture on the screen, press the "PC" button to confirm the PC signal is directed to the projector.

Turn the projector On before selecting a video signal. If the controller is not synced to the projector, press the desired input select button again.

Newest Projector Control Panel

The newest version controller has PC, Laptop and VCR/DVD selection buttons.

  1. The Projector On button must be pressed first to turn on the projector.
  2. The PC button must be pressed next to be able to view the computer image on the projection screen.

Audio Mixer Control (Pedistal Desks)

The Master control knob on the Mixer should generally be left at the 12 o'clock position. Bass and treble can be adjusted as needed.

Adjust speaker volume with the PC/LT or the VCR control knob. The first three knobs should be left at zero to minimize noise from unused inputs.

* NOTE : the newest eClassrooms do not have a separate mixer. Audio selection and control is done by the projector control panel only.

DVD/VCR Combo

DVD/VCR combo units are installed in all rooms. The main control buttons for Sony models are shown here in the highlighted areas. Other models will have similar buttons.

  1. Turn on the DVD/VCR (and the Audio Mixer if installed).
  2. Turn the Projector On via the projector control panel.
  3. After the projector has begun to show an image, press the DVD/VCR button.
  4. Adjust the volume on the projector control panel, or, on an Audio Mixer, adjust the VCR control a bit low to start. The Master knob should generally be left at the 12 o'clock position.
  5. Insert your DVD or videotape into the DVD/VCR combo and select DVD or Video on the front of the machine.
  6. Use the buttons on the front of the machine or on the remote control to play your selection.
  7. When you're done, turn the Projector Off.

DVD Rom Drive

Software for DVD movie playback is installed and tested in all eClassrooms.
The DVD software will only play "G" rated videos. Please use the DVD/VCR for playback with no restrictions and better video performance.

Public Performance Rights

All videos/DVDs shown in the classroom or anywhere on institutional premises must have public performance rights. The majority of videos and DVDs in the Kwantlen Library collection are purchased with these rights. For more information go to the Copyright Resources guides under the Faculty link on the Library website. http://www.kwantlen.ca/library/Services/feature.pdf

Connecting A Laptop

Plug the VGA cable on the desk into the monitor output of the laptop and activate the external display using the laptop controls.

Most laptops require the video to be switched to both laptop and external monitor (data projector). Refer to your laptop manual for instructions.

Note: This is usually a FUNCTION + F5 or F7, etc. Look for the icon on the laptop buttons.

Document Camera

Portable Document Cameras are available for loan at each campus library. They are intended for use in the Electronic Classrooms.

Training

Training sessions can be requested for new users in eClassrooms. Please call the ServiceDesk at local 2116 to make arrangements or ask at the Library AV Desk.
