Hola, welcome to our Kwantlen Spanish page!
The academic Spanish Program at Kwantlen Polytechnic University has been around
since the early 1980s. It started with one section of Basic Spanish, and it has grown to meet the increasing needs of language students of the 21st century. We presently offer Basic Spanish courses at the Langley, Richmond and Surrey campuses, and Intermediate Spanish and Advanced Spanish at the Surrey campus.

About our courses

BASIC SPANISH:

SPAN 1100 CR-3 (Basic Spanish I)
You will develop basic speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in Spanish while exploring the culture of the Spanish-speaking peoples.
Prerequisites: None

SPAN 1101 CR-3 (Basic Spanish II)
You will build on previously acquired basic skills and continue to develop speaking, listening, reading and writing proficiency at a basic level while further exploring the culture of the Spanish-speaking peoples.
Prerequisites: Spanish 1100 or Spanish 11 (with a C or higher) or assessment by instructor

In our Basic Spanish courses you will engage in a variety of activities intended to build the above skills. A detailed description of the course content and expectations can be found on the Course Outline. Key to your success in meeting course objectives is dedication, organization, and keeping up with your homework. Your active participation in class and particularly in pair/group work is imperative.

IMPORTANT
You are overqualified for Basic Spanish courses if you:
a) have a competence in the language beyond the level of these courses;
b) have already learned how to speak the language at home or through another experience;
b) immigrated to Canada from a Spanish-speaking country and you already know how to speak the language

INTERMEDIATE SPANISH:

SPAN 2200 CR-3 (Intermediate Spanish I)
Students will develop proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing at an intermediate level while further exploring the Spanish-speaking culture. Students are expected to converse exclusively in Spanish during class time.
Prerequisites: Spanish 1101 or Spanish 11 (with a B or higher) or Spanish 12 (with a C of higher) or assessment by instructor

SPAN 2201 CR-3 (Intermediate Spanish II)
Students will build on previously acquired intermediate skills and continue to develop proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing at an intermediate level while further exploring the Spanish-speaking culture. Students are expected to converse exclusively in Spanish during class time.
Prerequisites: Spanish 2200 or Spanish 12 (with a B or higher) or assessment by instructor

IMPORTANT
You are overqualified for Intermediate Spanish courses if you immigrated to Canada from a Spanish-speaking country and/or you already learned how to speak the language at home.

If this is your case, you must register Span 2205 or contact the instructor immediately for assessment

INTERMEDIATE SPANISH FOR SPANISH SPEAKERS:

SPAN 2205 CR-3 "Writing and Oral Skills for Spanish Speakers"
Students possessing a native or near-native command of oral Spanish and/or an upper intermediate level of the language will consolidate their knowledge of Spanish with a special focus on writing the language formally (i.e. spelling, orthography and punctuation, expanding vocabulary at formal registers, and broadening the range of topics used in written and oral expression). Students will gain writing skills in a simple but formal and clear style. They will also increase their awareness of the diversity of Spanish spoken in different Spanish-speaking cultures.
Prerequisites: SPAN 2201, native or near-native command of oral Spanish or assessment by the instructor

IMPORTANT: This course is designed for students possessing a native or near-native command of oral Spanish.

ADVANCED SPANISH:

SPAN 3310 CR-3 "Advanced Spanish Conversation through Film"
Students will expand their conversational proficiency through the understanding of and appreciation for Spanish-speaking cultures and communities around the globe. Students will combine language and culture through the study of popular films as rich sources of cultural information. Students will be exposed to content-based communicative language learning to acquire advanced Spanish conversational skills in meaningful contexts.
Prerequisites: SPAN 2201 or SPAN 2205 or assessment by the instructor

SPAN 3320 CR-3 "Advanced Spanish Reading and Writing"
Students will improve literary reading skills and advanced writing in Spanish. They will review complex grammar structures used in literary texts from different Spanish-speaking authors. Students will be provided with the necessary tools to enhance their vocabulary and to think critically and analytically about what they read and write in Spanish. Students' writing will include factual, expository, argumentative, and narrative essays.
Prerequisites: SPAN 2201 or SPAN 2205 or assessment by the instructor

Please note that this course website serves all our sections of Spanish in Richmond, Surrey and Langley. Sections for Span 1100 and 1101 vary locations depending on the semester and tests and assignments due dates for the respective sections vary as well.
