Faculty - Leave Without Pay

The purpose of this document is to provide guidance in applying the provisions concerning Leave Without Pay in Article 13.03 of the Faculty collective agreement. 

How do I apply for a Leave of Absence Without Pay?

A full or part-time leave of absence may be granted at the discretion of the employer. Requests for leaves will be made in writing to the appropriate responsible administrator.

How will I know if my request has been approved?

All requests will be dealt with promptly and will not be unreasonably denied nor dealt with in a discriminatory manner. The Employer will respond in writing to the employee indicating whether or not the leave has been approved. If the employer denies the leave, reasons for the denial will be provided to the faculty member.

For leaves greater than 30 days the employer may, at its discretion, require that the leave coincide with the beginning or end of a semester of instruction.

What happens to my benefit coverage during my leave?

Faculty on a full-time leave of absence will be responsible for benefit premiums should they choose to maintain them, subject to approval by Manulife. For faculty members on a part-time leave of absence, benefit premiums will be paid by the employer on a pro-rata basis.

Will I earn a salary increment while on a Leave Without Pay?

Normally no salary increment is payable for a period of leave of absence without pay. However the faculty member may, in writing to the University President, request a review of the activities spent during the leave without pay. If it is decided that the activities are relevant to the University curriculum, then the faculty member will receive any salary adjustments for which he/she would normally be eligible.

When am I required to let the employer know my return to work date?

For leaves longer than two months, the faculty member must confirm in writing his/her intent to return to work no later than two months prior to the expiration of the leave.
