Therapeutic Horticulture - Workshop Series One, with Ann Kent, HTM
This interdisciplinary program takes a holistic approach that recognizes the importance of cognitive, physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs in elder and other populations. Classes accommodate working professionals in related fields, or those researching career alternatives, by offering flexible program hours and strong, research-based program content.
PNUR 1135: From the Ground UP: Horticultural Basics for Therapeutic Gardening Spaces - Workshop #3
Some plants and garden practices provide ten-fold rewards for daily enjoyment of a therapeutic garden and for application in year-round activities. Selections of shrubs and perennials for sun and shade locations are illustrated with live samples and their use in therapeutic horticulture activities is explored with hands-on projects. These plants have particular merit for for providing vibrant colours, interesting textures, and fragrances that invoke reminiscence. Useful design hand-outs and plant lists included.

PNUR 1145: Therapeutic Horticulture and Well-being: Principles and Practices - Workshop #4 The principles and practice of research-based therapeutic horticulture and horticultural therapy in Canada, Great Britain, and the United States will be introduced and discussed. Illustrations of the application of therapeutic principles and practice will take place in the gardens surrounding the Pavilion, featuring herbs, vegetables, flowers, vines, and fruit trees, and in other beautiful areas of the UBC Botanical Garden that provide inspiration for their contemplative and restorative qualities. Wear walking shoes and bring a camera.

This interdisciplinary program further explores content introduced in Series One and directly reflects requests made by students in those workshops to learn more about the restorative people-plant connection, enabling and sensory garden spaces, and the practice of horticultural therapy.
PNUR 1175: Horticultural Therapy Techniques - Developing Session Plans for Health Care Settings - Workshop #7
The process of creating specific goals, objectives, and measurable outcomes for horticultural therapy activity sessions is important in implementing programs for individual residents or clients and in evaluating the success of HT programs, an important consideration in securing on-going funding. Various methods of documentation will be demonstrated through active participation in several HT activities. Other topics include working with an interdisciplinary team to better understand the profiles and needs of individuals and using assessment tools. Comprehensive handouts provided.

PNUR 1185: Gardens that Heal - Planning and Developing Sensory Garden Spaces - Workshop #8
This workshop considers research on general attributes of healing gardens, evidence-based guidelines for creating sensory gardens in health care settings, user perspectives in garden planning, and on-going evaluation of use of garden spaces. Plans for three grade level or raised bed sensory gardens that can be developed on modest budgets: a mixed border, a perennial bed, and a herb garden are discussed. A walking tour is included to visit trees, shrubs, and perennials of particular value in sensory gardens. Lots of design handouts and plant lists are included.
