Competency Assessment and Enhancement for Nurses (CA&EN) Program

The Competency Assessment & Enhancement for Nurses program is designed for nurses who wish to update and/or enhance their nursing practice skills. The starting point of this program is an individualized assessment of nursing knowledge and skills. Based on the assessment outcomes, areas for practice enhancement are identified and recommendations regarding educational support are provided.

The elements of the competency assessment are:

  1. Self-assessment of current nursing competence.
  2. Computer-based examination focusing on problem solving.
  3. Simulation learning experiences focusing on the domains of critical thinking, interpersonal skills, and psychomotor/technical skills.
  4. Recommended educational enhancement strategies (this could range from one course, laboratory practice, to a comprehensive re-entry program.)

Personal learning programs will be identified for each student specific to the assessment outcomes. A variety of educational courses and programs are offered for nurses through the Faculty of Community and Health Studies, at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
