Faculty of Science - Investing in Laboratories
Kwantlen’s Faculty of Science and Horticulture is at a unique time in its history. For 30 years, the Faculty’s focus was to provide learners a solid foundation in the sciences, preparing them for transfer to other institutions to complete their degree. Now, in Kwantlen’s new role as a Polytechnic University, the Faculty is entering a new era of opportunity – offering first rate degree-level education that will provide students with the scientific knowledge and skills they need to be ready to work in our competitive job market.
Revitalized Science Laboratories
Kwantlen has invested $1 million in Science laboratory facilities to be located on the Langley Campus. Combining open plan design concepts and the very latest in learning technologies, this learning environment will provide students with an inspiring backdrop for their practical work. The Lab will offer hands-on experiences in Biology and Environmental Chemistry, which will support programs such as Horticulture, Agriculture, and Environmental Protection Technology. It will be a centerpiece of the Faculty, and will serve to stimulate interdisciplinary collaboration and inquiry, enhancing each program immeasurably.
Investing in Science
Kwantlen has an urgent need to invest in several critical pieces of laboratory equipment that will be needed for Biology, Chemistry and the Agricultural Sciences. This equipment will help students receive a truly outstanding educational experience, learning modern techniques hands on, rather than reading about them or watching an instructor complete them.
Working with this equipment will help our graduates to be competitive in the employment market, as they will have highly specialized skills and a ‘toolkit’ of techniques acquired in laboratory and field settings, experiences not traditionally offered to undergraduates. Access to modern equipment for all students, in a teaching-led, small class environment, will help Kwantlen to attract and retain the best and brightest students with the strongest potential to succeed.
Kwantlen’s Faculty of Science is seeking partners to invest in the purchase of several high priority equipment pieces. In total, $725,000 is needed for the following items:
- DNA Sequence Analyzer
- Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope
- High Performance and High Capacity Centrifuge
- Ultra-Low Temperature Freezer
- CO2 Incubators
- Infrared Spectrometer
- High Pressure Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC)
- Nuclear Magnetic Resonant Spectrometer
- Auto-Analyzer
