Smoking on Campus

Recently the City of Surrey adopted changes to its Smoking Regulation By-Law, No. 16694, extending the restriction from smoking near entrances and air intakes to a distance of 7.5 meters (25 feet).

Kwantlen must abide by the new local By-Law in Surrey and, in its continued commitment to providing a safe and healthy environment for its community, will extend the 7.5 meter distance requirement to all campuses.

The current policy and the existing reminder signage at entrances have been amended to reflect these immediate changes; each individual at Kwantlen shares in the collective responsibility to support and encourage colleagues to maintain a safe, comfortable, and healthy educational and work environment.

If someone is smoking within a restricted area, please ask for their cooperation.  Security and Facilities personnel will be assisting in reminding people of the new requirements.

Violence in the Workplace

The Violence in the Workplace Policy identifies violence in the workplace as an occupational hazard and a focal area for regulatory enforcement. Whenever there is interaction between employees and the public, the employees may be exposed to incidents of violence. The employer must take appropriate action to eliminate or minimize the risk to employees. The following elements are a necessary part of a violence prevention program:

  • Policy
  • Regular Risk Assessments
  • Written Supplementary Instructions
  • Worker and Supervisor Training
  • Incident Reporting and Investigation
  • Incident Follow-up
  • Program Review

Regulations state that a risk assessment shall be performed in any place of employment in which a risk of injury to workers from violence arising out of their employment may be present. When a risk has been identified; procedures, policies and work environment arrangements to eliminate or minimize the risk need to be established.

The employer must inform workers who may be exposed to the risk of violence of the nature and the extent of the risk. If the identified risk is a known individual, such as a delivery person or ex-employee - the identity of the individual and the nature of the risk must be given to workers likely to come in contact with that person.

Pets on Campus

The Facilities Department would like to remind all members of the Kwantlen Polytechnic University community that pets are not permitted to enter any of the buildings on the Kwantlen campuses; with the exception of 'guide/working' dogs or small animals required for study purposes in laboratories.

We all share in the collective responsibility to maintain a clean, comfortable, safe, and healthy work and educational environment.

Your co-operation is appreciated.
