Presentation Title: Enhancing the critical thinking skills of first year business students
Time: 2 hours
What is critical thinking? Do/can instructors teach students how to think critically? Most post-secondary instructors would say that they do provide opportunities for students to think critically but extensive research says that isn’t the case. This interactive session will develop a common understanding of what critical thinking is, what it looks like, and why it should be a core competency integrated as part of every course. Practical strategies and tools to help students enhance their critical thinking skills will be explored along with potential assessment approaches. This session will be of interest to those who are interested in helping students engage in deep learning vs. memorization.

Follow up to presentation - I've attached the PowerPoint along with the rubric I discussed that was used to help students assess the quality of their short answer questions in Intro Accounting. I have also attached a copy of the weekly schedule I used that incorporates the use of pre-reading WebCT quizzes (to motivate students to read before attending lectures).
Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
