Eagles Golf Team Ends Best Season in Years
(Metro Vancouver) - The weather was on the side of the golfers this past season with every tournament showing sunshine. And the sun continued to shine for this 4th and final Tournament of the 2012-2013 PACWEST season at the Chilliwack Golf and Country Club hosted by University of the Fraser Valley (UFV).
The first day of competition showed some promise as Caroline Gleerup (Sweden/Richmond) was first to tee off in the Ladies’ Division and was the first to turn in her scorecard. Shooting her best tournament round this season, Gleerup handed in a respectable Day 1 score of 90. The Eagles’ men followed consecutively, one by one, with the best scores provided by Jason Thompson (Langley) with a score of 73, Aaron Ferrer (Delta) shooting 77 despite triple-bogeying the tough 18th hole, Paul Rempel (Smithers) with another 77 score, and Grant Steinberg (Surrey) rounding out the Day 1 Eagles’ scores with a 78.
The final round on Sunday provided some memorable highlights with Mark Gamache (Surrey) firing an impressive 78 in only his second event of the year to end the tournament with a cumulative score of 162. Gleerup parred the 18th hole to better her Day 1 score with an 89 to end her season in the last tournament with a 179 and 7th place; a personal best and only a stone’s throw away from achieving 4th.
In the men’s team division, Thompson fired a terrific 72 on Day 2, just narrowly missing a 4-footer at the 18th for an even par at 71. Thomas Rose (Surrey) redeemed himself in the 2nd round and shot a solid 73 (+2) followed by his good friend and teammate, Rempel, who scrambled to shoot a 78. The rest of the Eagles golfers were unable to break 80 but still worked hard for respectable outcomes.
Thompson (73-72) finished tied for 6th in the tournament and placed 12th individually overall for the season. A tremendous opening season for Thompson, he was well within reach of at least a top-three placing at all tournaments. Rose (80-73) tied for 19th place in Chilliwack and ended in 15th place overall for the season. First-year Eagle, Ferrer (77-80), finished the season standings placing tied for 18th while third-year Rempel (77-78) finished in a solitary 26th place.
The Eagles Golf Team finished 5th in the final tournament of the PACWEST season. Cumulatively, the Eagles Team finished 5th overall in the conference standings achieving consistent lower 600 scores in all four tournaments. This is the best placing the team has seen since the 2007-2008 season.

Kwantlen Golf Team Gains Confidence in Nanaimo
(Metro Vancouver) – The Eagles Golf Team travelled to Nanaimo for the 3rd Tournament in the PACWEST calendar hosted by Vancouver Island University (VIU) at the Nanaimo Golf Club this past weekend. First-year Eagle, Jason Thompson (Langley), proved that he could master the course and compete with the best in the league by shooting to 4 over par (76) on Day 1. Thompson finished strong in the final round with a birdie on 14, an eagle on 16 and nearly birdieing 18 to go even par on Day 2 for a total of 149 to tie him in 8th place in the tournament, well within reach of the other competitors with only 6 shots separating him from 1st place.
Hot on Thompson’s heels was third-year veteran, Thomas Rose (Surrey), with a total of 151 over the two-day tournament (76, 75). Rose had a great second day as well with a birdie on 16, flagging 17 to three-feet but missing the putt, and lipping out on 18 for another birdie. First-year teammate, Aaron Ferrer (Delta), had a great Day 1 score of 74 which was the Eagles best score of the day after birdieing the 18th hole and allowing him to round out the Eagles’ showing in the top-20 at 18th place with his combined score of 155 after a disappointing Day 2 round. Eagles Women’s golfer, Caroline Gleerup (Sweden), had a perfect first tee shot to open the tournament but posted a modest and consistent score over the two-day tournament and was unable to move up the ranks at the difficult Nanaimo Golf Club.
With this confidence showing, the Eagles men’s team moved up the ranks to 4th place with a cumulative 611 points in the tournament and just a stone’s throw away from third place held by VIU (598 points). “What an exciting situation for the team”, said head coach Levi Arcega. “Our goal in this tournament was to move up one notch to fourth place and we have. Now we need to maintain it [going into the last tournament].”
After Tournament #3, Jason Thompson is Kwantlen’s leading scorer with a cumulative score of 454 for 13th place in the rankings after this weekend’s stellar showing. Rose is currently in 16th place with 461 points followed closely by Ferrer in 18th place with 465 points over the course of 108 holes played.
The fourth and final tournament of the season will be held at the Chilliwack Golf Club hosted by the University of the Fraser Valley this weekend, on October 6th and 7th.

Kwantlen Eagles Host 2nd PACWEST Golf Tournament
(Metro Vancouver) – The Eagles hosted the 2nd PACWEST Golf Tournament of the 2012-2013 season at the Hazelmere Country Club in Surrey. With a full team of 7 male players and one female, the Eagles welcomed Mark Gamache (Surrey) and Caroline Gleerup (Sweden) for their rookie debut. Gleerup is the Eagles’ first female golfer since 2006 [Kristina Sutherland].Day 1 provided a fast course with lots of hardpan fairways and lightning-quick greens. Aaron Ferrer (Delta) turned in the best result for the Eagles with a solid first round of +3 for 75 on the day. Jason Thompson (Langley) held on to a 78 score, despite bogeying the last three holes. Thomas Rose (Surrey), who held the lowest score for the Eagles in the first PACWEST Tournament, also struggled on Day 1 on the back nine to keep his score in the 70’s with a 79.
Final round action on Day 2 turned in some exciting play as Thompson rallied back after a tough start, finishing the last 7 holes at one-under par and producing a terrific 75 result for a 153 over the weekend. Meanwhile, Ferrer came in with two birdies on the last six holes to finish with an impressive 76 and sole possession of 14th place in the Tournament at 151 points. The remaining members of the Eagles were puzzled by the difficult Hazelmere track, requiring precision tee shots and very accurate iron play to the tricky pin placements set up on both days. This is indicated by the best overall score in the field, Jared Callbeck (Camosun) firing 72 and 74, for a total of 146 for the tournament.
Closely behind Ferrer was Thompson who tied for 15th place over the tournament. Rose and Jeff Tanaka (Surrey) finishing tied for 29th and 36th, respectively. “I was very happy with our team, especially on the second day as we rallied together and finished strongly to pass Douglas and Thompson Rivers University in the standings,” said head coach, Levi Arcega. “We still have lots of work to do and each individual has a different challenge to face if we are to bypass the UFV and UBC-O teams.” The Eagles team placed a consistent 5th place in Team standings.
Gleerup (Sweden) played in her very first PACWEST Tournament and struggled on the difficult layout and overcoming nerves but was pleased with her performance. “I was so nervous out there but the girls I matched up with were so supportive and understanding and I learned so much playing in this competition,” stated Gleerup of her inaugural performance.
The next tournament of the season will be hosted by VIU at the Nanaimo Golf & Country Club on September 29th and 30th.
