Love Your Car and Your Wallet Too

fees_photo4For most of us, vehicles are an expensive necessity. And whether you own a newer or older car, every once and a while it needs some TLC.

To improve the longevity of your vehicle and save money on costly repairs down the road―not to mention to keep yourself and others safe—follow these easy maintenance tips from Kwantlen automotive instructor Dwayne Kaban.

  1. Be sure to get a regular service. Letting things go too long can result in costly damage, not only to your vehicle but your wallet.
  2. Learn how to check your vehicle’s fluid levels. Keeping fluids adequately maintained is important for both safety and service reasons. However, make sure you are using the correct fluids. Not all fluids are compatible to all systems. Failure to do so could cost you considerably as seals and parts may need to be replaced if contaminated with the wrong product.
  3. Be sure to check headlights, tail lights, brake lights, clearance lights and tire pressure regularly. To get the most out of your gas mileage and prevent damage to your tire rims, you should do a walk-around every day to make sure all tires are properly inflated.
  4. Check wipers and the washer system before you need them! Make sure you have washer anti-freeze installed prior to cold weather onset.
  5. Change your oil on a regular basis and remember that if you use your vehicle for short trips then you should be servicing it prior to suggested intervals. This type of driving causes oil to become contaminated very quickly.
  6. Even though your vehicle may be equipped with “long-life” coolant, have the PH checked at least once a year. If left too long this can also cause premature failure and costly repairs.
  7. If your brakes don’t “feel right” have them checked immediately. If they are making unusual noises then they are definitely letting you know something is wrong!
  8. Don’t attempt any “DIY” repairs unless you are extremely confident in your ability. Today’s vehicles can present some very technical processes that elude the untrained person and can manifest into a serious, if not, fatal situation.
  9. If you have any questions seek professional advice. As an alumnus you are entitled to special pricing and excellent service at the Cloverdale Campus Automotive Shop. To book an appointment, call 604-598-6113.
